Hi people of ZTH,
Had some problem ,
My crankshaft bearing was eaten up and further ate my block
now i have two choices
- buy new block
- weld the eaten up place in machine shop and touch up with new bearing

What do you all think ...
Is vr4 block worth it or getting a evo block is worthit
My Boost aim is 1.2bar for the future...

the toughest block you can get is still the vr4 rs block la :) old but gold.

Since u're gonna change block might as well re-bore it to sr20/supra pistons ie. 2.2 litre it will only cost a few hundred more.

Not recommended to use back the same block especially evo 3 which is considred the weakest among all 4G63s. Its ok for low boost but won't last aggressive usage and higher boost.

hehe no need rebore la bro .. im dry for the moment
aiks i tot vr4 blocks are all the same rite.. 200ps 220ps and 240ps..

yup all vr4 blocks are the same , be it 200 , 220 & 240 . rs spec its without luxury stuff , as you can find in a gsr version . about the engine , rs & gsr does come with the same power out put which is 240hp , just that the rs version e38a comes with a shorter ratio gearbox . same goes with the evo's .

eh danny , can ask a question , why go for sr20 pistons ?. where else the vr4 pistons alone can sustain up to 400hp .

stock VR4 block and pistons have been confirmed to be able to take up to 500hp on engine...

modding to supra pistons would prove to be non-conforming to standards and many things have to be custom machined and made...all these with the hidden costs...might as well go for a set of forged pistons...which wud easily do better than the supra pistons..

hihihihi...this kinda statements make me love VR4 more and more evryday....

hidup VR4....yeahhhhh...

but uhuk uhukuhuk....unfortunately my wan not VR4 200 wan...uwaaaa...i'm stuck with the eclipes wan....

:( dunno how many it can take....issit same like Evo which is light but not strong???any highlighters...

yoh jin..sorry to hear about your engine....isk isk isk.....i think the best solution is to get a vr4 block...easy......internal can go up to 500 hp.......so easily boost your tdo5h evo3 turbo 1.5 bar....hikhikhikhihikhikhik..:D...by then your car already monster laa bai....slow2 bai.....dont give up.....first time modifying engine must be like this...a lot of problem...therefore a lot of money also used....dont worry...all the sifu2 hear will help u bai.....n then we go up to Ukay n tune up your car...

vestax/sdf, aren't sr20/supra pistons bigger? reason was to increase the engine capacity from 2.0 to 2.2 litre.

they have 86mm bore diameter. hp increase not much compared to changing turbine. get new block la. there is some risk if u rebore the engine and put bigger piston.

if rebore and machine shop dint do it properly.. huhu..
2.2 litre .. have to do lots of tuneups then , fueling and all..

actually what I was thinking is :-

Get new block + rebore since u're gonna take out everything might as well do the works. Save and maximise workmanship cost.

Btw jinkl I got a spare block if u want u can have it for RM300.

well the problem is , people nowdays don't see the point of putting a nother car oem pistons , replacing the vr4 pistons . where else the vr4 pistons can sustain at a high amout of hp like sdf mention , the best way is to go for forged pistons . there are some risk when reboring the block , like what zaki have said , its not worth it doing that kind of mod , it might cost you a few hundred bucks for the sr20 pistons , but how about the reliability of the block , cause the cylinder wall is much tinner then before , the water jacket might crack and you might have overheating problems , another thing what kind of compression are you getting out by using the sr20 pistons ? . you have to take all that into account , cause if you want to mod the engine , better do it the correct way .

yup..

imagine danny trying to wear vestax pants...might fit...but some un-comfort or length may not be very right... simple as that Dan.. ;)

old skool don look at things like..shape and height of the piston dome..the angle when the valves open n close might actually hit the piston...this = detonation ! :o also = bent valves...

the other thing bout supra pistons or sr20 pistons is that the piston pin area has to be custom machined...so again...think bout the reliability of machining thinner piston pins juz to save da few bucks..but in the end u have a problematic engine... ;)

SDF : explained in a nice way hehehe.. understood...

Any other thing u all recommend me to change in the block before plug ?

piston rings / conrod bearing / crankshaft bearing

Another question ... oil pump cant be changed ? my mech told me so ...
this is my second block blown and its because of oil pump failure
dont want this to happen again , let me know some source where i can buy new oil pump , water pump is new and good ...

third question , is it practical to put a 1.5mm metal gasket
as we know vr4 is low compression already rite
if im gonna boost 1.2bar future , do i need to put metal gasket ?
if yes better i put it in now rite ?

thanks for all ya replies

agreed to do it the correct way, still since the block is going to be taken out, I'd take the opportunity to maximise your blocks potential, be it forged pistons or any other mods, coz if u're going to do it again next time, u have to pay double the workmanship cost for taking the block out the 2nd time.

hehe advice taken.. :)
but danny.. u sure u want 2.2l ah :P
look like vr4 power not enough hehehehe

no la I don't want 2.2, if my car is still drivable probably a 2.6 with a different block.

jin..

did ur mech remove the balancer shaft for u the last time ?

oil pump can be removed and serviced...if he knows how..he can actually remove the spring and check if its still good...alot of time Mitsu pumps fail due to a spring inside the pump...so wat he can do is change or insert some shims to increase oil pressure... ;)

err sorry for disturbing...

hi danny , do you have spare vr4 blok? if yes wanna sell it? interested :)

peace
