I thought the punishment was somewhat harsh. The FIA were pressured into handing a sentence down to Mclaren and the world record fine of 100 million is totally absurd. No matter how rich they say about Formula 1 team, 100 million is no joke and its basically taking like 1/5 out of a teams entire season budget. What Ferrari got 3 years ago on the team orders, seem paltry and 1 million for that shambolic act of fixing the race result is unjustified. In my opinion, you either disqualify them for the constructors race or you fine them 100 million. Either one, it would have been alot less punishing on Mclaren.
On the other hand, the reason why Mclaren faced a second enquiry is because they found new evidence on email liaison between Alonso, Coughlan and De La Rosa. According to the FIA statement, they issued a notice to 3 of Mclaren drivers namely Hammy, Alonso and PDLR and they were told to disclose any evidence they have with them, or risk having their licence suspended. In return of disclosing any evidence, they will be assured that the World Drivers Championship Title race will not be affected. Alonso and PDLR gave their statements while Hammy said he has no evidence. With that new evidence, FIA launched their 2nd enquiry that led into this punishment.
This got me thinking, has Alonso blew his final chance to make friends with Mclaren? Hammy's probably an obedient fella and he knows his future belongs to Ron Dennis and its better to be on Ron's good books. Alonso was noticably missing from the hearing on Thursday too, choosing to "focus" on the weekend instead of being at the hearing that would determine the immediate future of the team. He could have at least lent some morale support to the team, considering they've worked so hard to put him where he is this season. The spygate scandal aside, Alonso's body language this season tells me he's not a great driver like the 2 times world champion Mika Hakkinen. Even if he wins the 3rd title this season, it won't put him in the same league as Michael Schumacher or anyone else and this is simply because he doesn't act like one. Remember mid season when he was sulking away when his debutant team mate was earning lots of raves. He should have pulled his socks and concentrate on the driving instead of going public saying the team only wants 'the British driver' to win. These small skirmishes led to an unfriendly incident in Hungary when both drivers acted stupidly in blocking each other while causing so much embarassment to the team.
I'd like Alonso to win this season as it highlights what a quick and intelligent driver he is on the track. Off the track, he can be a real idiot. He lacks the gentleman and composure of a real world champion, something that differentiates Alonso to Schumacher. As such, i think this should be his last season in Mclaren, despite signing a 3 year contract. Even if he wants to stay, i think Ron should get rid of him and concentrate on Hamilton.
