Super-Charge

Honestly, I have never seen or heard a tortoise(kura-kura) walking all its way from KL to Phuket and don't forget walking back to KL again.

My car was in front of Gerard's SC SGTi during the entire Phuket convoy. Those never driven in single file convoy will never no the among of stress and punishment put to our cars. High speed on highways and constantly down/up shifting gears on village twisty bends in southern Thailand.

Any highly moded sgti(force induction especially) not able to clock at least 380km full tank are not encourage to participate in the convoy. In the end it turned out that the sc sgti had the best fuel consumption and even better than stock gti. We have to keep down shifting to keep up with the convoy where as the sc sgti has plenty of torque and seldom need to use its lower gears.

What Gerard wrote about his sc sgti was true and it didn't give any problems during the entire trip. At that time the SC kit was still in its R&D stage and the Phuket trip was the acid test for its reliability.

Note: I am not affiliated to Gerard's workshop and I don't come out with him for drinks or chit chatting, not even once. I don't get anything from him for writing this but just want to uphold the truth.

Many thanks for the post on the convoy...Didnt know you are a contributor here as well, it's been too long a time since we spoken to each other..Hope everything's fine with you and your ride....

That trip to Phuket does bring back sweet memories and stressful one too, drive from morning till late, tired and lack of sleep.....BUT was great fun....

you should ask our backmarker, liew...he had a hard time chasing me especially when we got seperated from the main convoy at traffic lights..That was a trip with loads of fun and glad to have met you guys too and thanks for setting this matter of kura-kura and long distance trip straight....
My new hp no is now at 012-3073928, the old one is out...Contact me if you happen to drop by KL..

Regards & cheers

Bro,

If you liked what you saw from these pix taken about a year ago during this interview & test drive with Asian Auto, then you will be more satisfied and happy to know that it got much better now, nicer and even neater. ;)

Let me know what's your ride and hope to see your ride with one in the future..

No worries dude, was very easy for me to do that. Google is a great search engine just key in supercharger in the subject and you can get many foreign tech articles on supercharging. But those angmohs sell SC kits damn expensive man.

Sazali
razaksa,

Anyway, thanks again for your help, appreciate it very much..

mkjb,

On the question of a sc bolt on kit, I just don't have the answers for you..

I'm not too sure how will the responce be with kembara owners, no doubt it lacks power but many owners are happy with it...But if the responce is encouraging, then we may consider doing a test on the kembara with a bolt on kit.....sometime in the near future....

The 4agze is from the toyota family, it runs 16 valves, twin cam with lower compression pistons and it's supercharged..A very, very strong engine indeed...I love this engine to bits... ;)

Regards & cheers

Hi Gerard, I've been following up this "Supercharging - thingie" for quite a while now, a good replacement for turbos, for as long as u don't want max power, I guess. Right now, I'm in the market for an affordable car and the tuning that goes with it. Could you please list out all the stuffs that come with the RM 5.5k supercharging kit for the SGTi, what other things that must be done to the car for max supercharge potential (rough costs, where to do and why must do la.. ) etc.. Right now, I'm very interested to shop around for a nice SGTI example.. : )

ace79,

Many thanks for the support all this while for following my thread...Like Ive always say, if you want a respectable pocket rocket which serves as a good daily driver with minimal maintenance, high torque at low rpms, then superchargers are for you...Not that I'm undermining turbochargers, they are brilliant especially if your quest is in excess of horsepower..We are here to provide you guys with an additional option besides turbo charging or NA modding...

For RM5,500, you will get: (GTI MMC)
Custom inlet manifold
Supercharger inlet manifold
Injectors
Re-cond supercharger
Supercharger belting
Piggy back computer
All necessary mountings and parts fabricated
Workmanship & installation
(Note: this sc kit supports only MMC GTI and not siemens )

Maintenance:
Supercharger belt change once a year
Supercharger service or oil change, once a year

Instant responce and high torque, especially on low rpms.

If sc belt snaps, or sc unit jams, you run on NA with no damage cause to your engine. Just no boost. Change belt of replace sc unit then everything is back to normal. ;)

You can choose to re-install everything back to oem with the sc kit out, should you plan on selling your car or figures that selling on oem car will fetch a higher price.

Very low profile with no tell tale signs of it being forced induction besides deeper exhaust note. :)

You would require extractor 4-2-1, with 2.5' straight flow with silencers.(better air out, but supercharged cars does run a deeper note, especially on 2.5' exhaust)
Open pod air filter (better air in)
Colder plugs no.7
If air filter or exhaust remains stock standard, you will get choking at 4000rpm onwards
Better brakes (hahaha).. :D

What I've been talking and proven with this GTI in Phuket and in the forum is stage one with minimum of 30% increase in hp and torque and stage 2 will be ready sometime in april this year with higher targets and 3rd stage should be ready by end or early next year..even higher target...(stage 3 is very challenging indeed), that much I can tell you.for now..So let's just say... there is much potential in the 4g93p engine...for development and gains :D

Well that's about it, if you are really keen to know more, we could meet up if you are around Pj area and enjoy a teh tarik session and a short test drive and thats when you could feel and get a better understnading of what I mean....Nothings beat testing and getting a feel of it.and then you can decide for yourself if this kit fits you..You could reach me at 012-3073928..Call me if you are game to meet up ya..

Till then happy hunting..

gerard

Any reliability issues should siemens ecu be replaced with MMC ecu? Also what type of piggyback are you using for the SC kit? Thanks

Sazali
sazali,
We had many gti's that changed ecu and complete system from siemens to mmc, so far only good words, as you could feel a slight, very slight improvement in smoothness....

The piggy back we are using (rest assured) is from a reputable brand and brand new. Which is included in the package.. :D

Sorry bro, I cannot reveal the brand name here just yet,,,Hope you understand...When we launch, then that would be the time...Cos still testing it for it's reliability...Stay cool ya.

Gerard

For Proton models like Gen2 where your SC kits are not yet available, are you able to do a customized one? Thanks

Sazali

cool !! would love to try the SC.
Gerrard did you guys have SC for 1.6 waja?

:P ..sorry if the Q already asked before..too lazy to read la..16 pages..too long.

Gerard, thanks for the detailed reply..so it'll be at least around RM 2-3k ;) initially, for the filter, plugs and exhaust mods bfr the SC kit..i don"t know much about these MMC ( which could be the earlier gen SGTi's ) and Siemens ECU + wiring looms..could you or anyone tell me which production year these MMC - specced SGTi's came out with? I've seen the pics in the Asian Auto site..perhaps you could shed more light about your filter + exhaust mods ( where to get 'em done, like the air filter remount :P and the exhaust mods ) What about the boost meter? Do I need to get 'em as well ( not included in the kit eh? ) What if I get these done bfr fitting the SC kit : open pod filter, iridium plugs, exhaust mod, S - AFC II..would there be greater gains to be had, and will I get max potential from the SC kit..read in a Autoworld posting on SGTi, read that the S - AFC II can re'tune' the ECU. So, if I get a Siemens ECU - fitted GTi and fit the S - AFC II, will I still get the max power from the SC kit without having to resort to fitting a MMC ECU + wiring loom? Ah yes, a test drive is a very good idea..but I don't get much free time nowadays ( have to work graveyard shifts, training new staff :( ) damn it..someone got nice, first gen SGTi for sale ( preferably low miles, accident - free!, no or minimum mods, since I want to do my own mods ( except for complete suspension change that's not too hard or bumpy - riding! And yes, nice number plates are required! Would like something like 1's and 8's, or 9's and 7's, susun cantek ones ya! )

Sazali
sazali,

We don't mind if we have a Gen2 to as a test base or custom one but that would require time?... :D

If you do come to kl, buzz me and we could discuss further on this matter, even customization, we woulddn't be able to do anything yet till mid of after mid of this year..Busy with the proton models at the moment..

ace79..

If you are in the hunt for a sgti, then I would recommend those from the year 99 to early 01..These are from mmc (I hope I'm right)...The kit comes complete with fuel & timing management (piggyback) so the safc is not require here, we try not to complicate things with too much tuning here and there or with too many tuning gadgets..

What I recommend is, install the sc kit 1st, then proceed from there step by step..ie: get the feel of the sc kit, low end responce & take off is still very good but will encounter choking at 4k rpm onwards, step 2 is where you get the extractor done (4-2-1) & open pod air filter with colder plugs, then get what step 2 feels like, step 3 is when you get the the complete exhaust system done, and thats where you get the max feel and power without any choking powering up till 6,800rpm.
This way you get a new feel with every step of upgrades done and you could shop around longer for parts or save money and then prioritise what you want to upgrade next.

At the moment, we have not done any test of the sc kit with siemens thus cannot say much bout it. Most gti's that comes to us are having some probs with the siemens or are simply unsatisfied with it's power and request a change over to mmc prior to fitting the sc kit....No doubt it's additional expenses involved but these customers are happy at the end of the day with it's power and smooth power delivery of the kit and the mmc change over....Only problem is these days every one seems to be in the market looking for the mmc loom and the complete kit for such a change over, thus increasing the price and availability...Just need more time in sourcing one..at the lowest possible price.. :D

The boost meter is optional, reason being is there are many brands out there, be it cheap, expensive new ones, or 2nd hands which is better for owners to out source themselves...Install the boost meter when you fit the sc kit.

On the mag pix that you saw in asian auto, the piping of the air filter is custom made with the relocation of the battery ( smaller size too) so I can route the air filter behind the headlamps for better cooling effect with a heat shield, both are custom made type cos they are cheaper then the ready ones...The extractor which I use during the picture shoot was given free from a friend so I wouldn't know what make it's from...For the next photo shoot, we are developing a new equal length stainless steel extractor that would see slight increase in performance compare to the one i'm using currently...its the normal ones you purchase over the counter.

Yup, like I've said, nothing beats a test drive and have a feel of how the sc kit performs in your own words...

Will keep a look out for any sales of good condition gti for you..Please provide me your contact or you could pm me your contact.

Call me when you free for a test drive..

gerard

around how much will it be, do u accept credit cards?
bro,

Will be looking at the range of RM3k plus for the sc kit (minus the exhaust and air filter, plugs, these are optional items) :D

Yes, we do except credit cards (visa), We would require a deposit and final payment upon completion of installing the sc kit, payment (deposit or full) is either bay cash or credit card. Sorry, we do not except cheques... B)

Would appreciate if you could pm me your contact and details of your car and year for my compilation, trying to gather ppl for our launch sometime in april and could contact you for test drives once the 1.5 is completed...Or you could contact me at 012-3073928 to check on the development of this model..

Have fun
