guys need some help here...just got an r34 gtr recently...and previous owner didnt really drive it much...been keeping it in his garage...now my brakes are squeling like crazy especially at low speeds...is this due to dust acumulated on the discs? btw my brake pads are still thick...i asked a mechanic before and he said maybe because the car has not been moving for quite some time..and the dust is already stuck on the disc...he told me to drive around for a while to see if there's any difference...if not just skim the discs...what do u guys think of this?

Re: squeling brakes

Try Ask your mechanic air spray those dusty brakes ....instead of he asking you driving around to reduce the dust~heee

If not then you need to check your brake pad spec before skimming.

Re: squeling brakes

Air spray the disc or the brakes?...there are some black lines n spots on my discs...it looks like dirt stucked there...cannot be cleaned though

Re: squeling brakes

My brakes squeal very loud in the morning. The sound resonating off the multi-storey carpark is downright freaking irritating. Sorry neighbours.

Re: squeling brakes

The brakes caliper and brake pad surrounding. You might surprise what will you see :) ...if you going for disc skimming then overhaul those caliper one shot.

Re: squeling brakes

from what i experienced with my ride..

skimming disc brakes should be done if u feel vibrations whenever u hit the brakes either at slow or high speed..i did that and it worked..

i also experienced this squeaking sound..what i did was changed my pads even though they were still thick and for a short while the sound disappeared.. but then few months ago the sound came back :banghead:

so imo changing ur pads (which is still thick) will only solve this prob for a while..try clean ur discs' surfaces 1st before u splash ur cash buying unnecessary pads..and i 2nd the idea to clean ur brakes by blowing air through them..

Re: squeling brakes

I don't experience any vibrations during braking but the squealing usually happens at low speed braking...cleaning of the calipers and pads can be done at any tire shop is it? Should I change the pads? I do hv spare pads

Re: squeling brakes

I had this problem since day 1 of the skyline. From the Endless CCX to Endless SSS and VN. The squealing is due to the caliper, rotor or pads resonating to the frequency caused by the friction.

The only way to get rid of it is to alter the frequency resonance by introducing some "softer" material in between pad & caliper. The shim is suppose to take care of this but after years of vigorous usage, the surface material of the shims will deteriorate. Hence leaving a piece of useless metal in between.

What did for me was to spray the shims with urethane material (high tech shit) but paint might work too(cannot guarantee) to create a frequency absorbing layer. I used to add layer of silicon to them. Both ways works. I still do get a squeal once a while. Usually when I have not driven the car in days and a thin layer of rust formed on the disc.

Not to overlook this other factor, a badly bedding in pads/rotor combination might cause this as well. No harm skimming the rotor a little and re-bed in the pads properly.

Re: squeling brakes

How much would it be to skim the discs? What's the price roughly? Maybe I should try remove the pads and try cleaning them first

Re: squeling brakes

I don't know. Perhaps RM50 per piece. Removing and putting them back might remove the squeal for a day or two only.

Re: squeling brakes

So what's the solution then? Is your brakes still squealing? What did u do to stop it?

Re: squeling brakes

racing pad perhaps? need to warm up?

yeah mine is Project U 600 degC..not sure how to warm up pads..nvr heard abt that..

good to try this one..

i skimmed all my 4 rotors for RM200 total..

Re: squeling brakes

maybe the car doesnt have that metal plate thingy thats on the pad... its shaped like the pad itself... squeal guard maybe?

because a darkchild lost his while installing the his brakepads and his brakes squeal all the time

farizio:
its call anti-squeal shim...^^

usually there's 4 shim for a pair of brake pads...

chocolatesttarfish:
don't spray wd40 to the brake component...it will harden the caliper guide pin rubber boot & the piston dust cover...plus the friction surface of the brake pads and the disc rotor must be clean frm oil residue...if not, later got no brake at all...erm,just try to put some mp grease between the shim and the brake pads...

will look around for the mentioned anti-squeal shim..

but for the grease..wouldn't u smell like burning oil all the times since the rotor surfaces are hot?or u mean a high temperature kind of grease..like molykote?
