Hi guys,

My new car is arriving soon and i'm quite excited about it. But i need some opinions from you guys.

All these while, my definition of running in and maintaining a healthy engine is as follows:

1. For the 1st 1000km, drive around below 2.5k rpm (if possible 2k rpm).
2. For the subsequent 5000km, drive around below 4k rpm.
3. Rev all i like after step 2.

but however, just today, my boss taught me another way to run in my engine

a. For the 1st 1000km, drive around below 4k rpm. During this period, slowly rev up from idle to around 4k rpm and then slowly let off the gas. Change oil at 500km mark and then go for the free service at 1000km mark.
b. Drive as i like after step 1 and try changing engine oil at around 4000km.

So, I'm not sure which method is right.. could some taikors give me some insight?

lol y so troublesome 1?

new car b4 1000km drive slowly like old man then service it.....new car not encourage to drive like mad because is NEW ma.....got those sisa besi, new chemical thingy and such.

after 1000km try to push the limit to RED LINE something like is NOW OR NEVER.

just like train your car, if not your car power won't able to 'open up'

myth.

all the old rubbish can throw out the window. The old school of thought applies to older cars. these days most cars are already "run in" at the manufacturers.
but if it leaves a peace-of-mind for you to do so, drive under guideance, it your car, nothing wrong with tat

my 2 cents..

dun push ur car too hard b4 first service..after that..feel free to reach the red line..

btw, there's a website showing how to breaking in ur car engine properly..but i seems to forgot the address..

when they taking ur car for inspection, they trashing it edi....so y shud u start driving slowly? ppl advice u to drive slow for the 1st 1000km for u to get used to ur new car.

hmmm.... hope my car did not suffer much trashing... my 1st baby... :P

will drive as normal loh (i always drive slowly, make sure my rev below 2k rpm)... after 1st service, will try to find out what my baby can do...

but what i really hope is that there will be some nice bodykits in the market for me to choose and mod... for example, something like the R3 version would be very very nice... hehehe...

omg, after reading up on the website provided by koolspyda bro, i'm getting more confused. grrrr.... whether to or not to trash my car after i get it....

*blur*

but if you are afraid that your parent may blame you (if white smoke comes out after 3 years then heheh play safe)

actually a lot of manufacturer (in handbook) ask to drive slowly. But my guess is they always say that to put all "liability" to owners if cars are a lemon or has problems in initial run.

thats why it safe to buy reliable cars with good track record. (in malaysia there is very little "laws" to protect buyers.)

my parents won't blame anything on me... coz its MY car.. hehehhee....

but, from that website you gave, it might be some mechanic who wants ppl to break their engines and to send them to repair? hehehehe... possible? but i might be wrong lah... but anything is possible. it makes sense that nowadays the engines are made using new technology and old break in method might not work... this might be true...

so, in a very idiotic dilemma now... grrrr......

it your car & it probably aint a sports car (sorry, if it is) but my guess it your first (own) car?

drive as is (a sedan); safe, not reckless; moderate to your style.

& dont worry

as i read sumwer...
der shuoldnt be any problem for cars built todays...
as they r built to a tolorence for it to be run as usual...
no need to like drive slow...
i think its ok to drive as normal
but not to hard for the 1st 1000km

normal as in u would drive daily...
not de occasionally impulsive al the way revving

qftmft

you should come down to shah alam COE and see how they deliver ur car "fresh" out of the oven....i bet u wont call it new after that but hey its already been ran in for you...drive like normal nobody asking u to redline it to impress ur buddies...h0h0

koolspyda bro, it ain't a sports car, maybe just want to make it look like one though... hahahha.... i think a hot hatch might be more suitable in this case and you are right about my first time owning a car.

razr_sped bro, will take your advise on driving as per normal... i also feel that i should drive it normally (2-3k rpm) for the first 1000km.

shanashi bro, yeah, i heard about it from someone else in the forum. they do hand brake turns when they deliver it... hope they don't break anything...

juniorkirk bro, lolz... will drive it slow for the 1st 1000km loh... after that max it regularly... hehehe...

one thing i can assure u is that rev-like-mad happened even before the car arrive to u. IMO, modern engine is more robust compare to wat we had last time.

i see.... if that is the case, i think it will be prudent if i change my engine oil first?

i read that 80% of those metallic residue will come off at the 1st 20miles of the engine. not sure how accurate that is but maybe it will be good to change the oil when i go get my car?

drive as u like bro...its ur car, discussing here will only confuse u more...as like evry new car,u just need to drive slow to get used to it...thats just it...

ask ur mechanic or foreman why...they can explain...
did u ever see how the people run in their track car???
