Fuel Cosumption Problem

I currently drive a standard modified (stock lah) 1997 wira 1.5 (auto) a/b. The thing is everytime i drive from KL to Malacca it takes about rm40. and thats normal driving (to me, NORMAL on highways would be 120kmh, not 180.. standard maa). i fear of leaking but workshop ppl say theres no problem. question is is my car's fuel consumption normal or do i need to overhaul or something? i'm considering changing to manual because people say it can 'save minyak' compared to auto. whats the procedure and price for the stuffs i need? or should i just ditch the wira n trade it for a satria 1.3? but sayang ler because wira 1.5. any ideas?

that's vr abnormal... if u say its a 2way trip then ok lar... ur car seems to be drinking fuel and spilling them...

anyway, my car also having FC problem.. i'm seeking help too... sorry bro, cant help u... :)

yeap, people say manual has better FC... but bare in mind that it all depends on how u drive... if u alwiz rev high high before changing gear, it will also hurt ur pocket...

perhaps u can tune ur gear ratio... changing gear at optimum revs does lower ur FC, no matter auto or manual...
convert from auto to manual expensive ler.. :p

If i'm not mistaken, ur fuel consumption is due to your 3 speed auto gearbox. Imagine, you are driving at 120kmh at 3rd gear. For sure you consumption will be high. You can opt for an engine transplant, same cc as your original including the gerabox. Price varies. if you want mistu engine, it will cost a bit more. Proton engine should be cheaper. First rule of engine conversion, source around. Shop around, get a few quotations, scout a few workshops and then make your decision. Best of luck. Cheers

wat really matters is the gear ratio...like my manual gearbox...3k rpm edi 90km...

but 1st of all ameque...u need 2 list out wat u've mod 4 ur car....mayb sumthing is not rite 4 example 2" piping...tats too big 4 1.5...

my car is running on carb. old version maa.. and no i dont want to change engine. that will cost alot. changing from auto to manual only around rm1200; for gearbox, clutch plate, + service charge.. i tried using cyclone, but still i see no difference. maybe changing the gear ratio?

Ameque : Sorcerer already answered your question. It's your 3-speed gearbox that's causing the high fuel consumption. I drive a Wira A/B 1.5 SE (16" rims, extractor diff, etc) and I get 380km to RM$50 on the new fuel prices on the highway and 330km in KL driving. That adds up to be about 16cents per litre and that's high man. We need to change our gearboxes. Perhaps we can transplant in a Evo7 auto gearbox. 5-speed gearbox should help! :) But prepare to pay thru ur nose if you ever do find one...

chk yr rpm at 120kph...for wira auto it shd be not more than 4000rpm.....at 110kph maybe 3500rpm.........if yr rpm is showing abnormally high then there may be a problem with yr auto g/box or ECU which may b the cause of high consumption......the proton's 3-speed auto g/boxes always develop this kind of problems....its best to throw the g/box away & transplant any compatible manual g/box & the FC will improve tremendously.........if u want to repair the g/box then u can go to SUN ENG HUP AUTO TRANS in 61 , persiaran segambut tengah , K.L ....www.sunenghup.com

Control fuel consumption

The best way to control your fuel consumption, is to control your right leg. :)
But seriously ameque, do list down the mods you have made to your car (if any). Maybe there is something wrong there. Othewise it could be your car's tuning. If you believe that the high fuel consumption is not caused by your auto tranny, it may be something else. Like I said, list down the mods you have made and maybe someone will spot the problem. highway driving kl-melaka cost rm40 obviously the matter is not yr driving style. i am sure the problem is it's the 3 speed gearbox. u should look at the rpm when u drive at constant 120km/h at highway. last time when i drive 1.3 manual carb, it's 3500rpm. fuel consumption is high even at highway driving.

now driving kl-melaka using honda civic ES 1.7 4 speed gearbox, 110km/h at 2800rpm fuel consumption is excellence. pump full, gaunge needle above Full line. reach kl, gaunge needle is touching on Full line :D.hehhee...

Izso: dropping in evo 7 5 speed gearbox?u joking rite? u think 4g15 got 280hp to support it? if say like tat drop in a 6 speed manual gearbox even better..hehe..

wah... drive at highway constant 120kmh at 2800rpm??...
my iswara 1.3L manual goes 120khm at 3800rpm at 5th gear... not sure is it i didnt rev high high at lower gears when i pick up... but on highway, i usually rev till 3000-3200rpm before changing gear... on urban drive about 2500rpm change gear liao...

Let me give you a few reasons why your 1.5L wira auto consumption is so high.

1) You don't have an overdrive gear

2) Your torque converter does not have a 'lock up clutch'

3) 120Km/h is out of the fuel efficiency sweet spot

Some possibilities:

4) Old engine, your tuning could be out

5) Your tyre pressure is too low
