Guys....

My EVO 4's engine blew up last 19th DEC 2006... Black day for Me and The whole of JB.....

Cause of problem? engine oil starvation.... it dried up.... without any warnings... I checked the level 2 days before the incident and it was 1/2 full where I have about 1000km to go till the next change... but that day, it dried up totally.... this caused the main bearing to heat up and fail causing it to grind it's housing and later the whole crank shaft assembly failed. Left a hole in my block. Talks with my mechanic suggested that the oil seal between the main bearing and the main pulley was worn and this caused the oil to seep out and water got in... (heavy rain and flooding....)

Got a replacement engine already but now have to look for the money... heheheheheh... engine cost alone is abt 3K not counting installation and other things that might be broken....

bummer!!!!

If you can manage it, try to get an engine from the V onwards.

The IV engine uses the same thrust washer design as the I-III and 2nd gen DSM, which is a faulty design that makes the engine prone to crankwalk, as may have happened to you.

Did you hear ticking or knocking noises before your engine KO'd?

Any persistent knocking noises before it let go (like lifter noises but louder) or the thing just blew without warning?

the sound, maybe started not so loud or audible by me(got my MP3 player on that time). then got extremely loud ... like knocking of the piston to the cylinder head!! then knocking + crakcling, then kpooofff..

May or may not be related to crankwalk, hard to tell if you didn't spot any of the usual symptoms such as gradually louder ticking and/or sticking clutch pedal, and I'm guessing you didn't measure the crankshaft for freeplay when you got the car, so it's all just conjecture.

Anyway, good luck with the new engine and hope you get it up and running soon.

cannonfolder:how to check the crankshaft for freeplay?i have read thru mlr but no idea how to check.im driving a evo 4 too.afraid it will blow without warning since mileage quite high now.the tappet was quite loud now but sure the sound was from the head and not the block

gooseman:did u boosting it when it happen?or just cruising?
