DIY cold air intake (need comments)

hi every master,
i am want to DIY cold air intake...
the purple line inside the picture which is my planning connection...
the circle part is i want to drill it...

the hole which i make it from drilling ... is still inside the front grill ... so the water would not easy flow inside to my hosepipe...

er... i just want to ask is there any disadvantage for my planning ???
i am thinking quite long time ago .... but not dare to do it ... cause afraid got side effect...
is my plan good enough?

if possible do not bend the CAI pipe.
try rotate the air filter box so the existing duct facing straight beside the battery there, and make hole there.

From what i can see, I'd advise making the line in slanted down a bit - so that whatever sand or water that gets in can slide back out to the front and away from your air intake filter. I notice dat u also have space to take the air from below the car...

I've seen some options where ppl actually make the air entry point from below the car to ensure water or sand goes down (thanks to gravity)...but last i heard, when he went thru some big water pool on the road, water got into his system and he had to do an engine rebuild...try checking out 'Krueger's' page (look him up in the member list)

FD35, yeah it's possible. No problem bending the CAI as long as it's not bent too much. Just remember ur airfilter will get dirty faster.. What airfilter are you using anyway?

If you are using a good airfilter, drill until ur CAI hose is pointing to the front of you car la, so straight away air will enter. Nice..


But depends, do u drive highways normally or short distance drives?

If short distance drive then what i said above will be good, air ram straight into ur airfilter.

If long distance i don't suggest securing the CAI hose onto the hole of your airfilter cover because might cause some resistance during high speed. Face the inside end of the CAI hose to the hole on the airfilter cover with a small gap in between will be good.. How you're gonna keep it pointing there, u have to figure out yourself heheh..


Just remember to find a way to secure your hose ok with cable ties..

The white colour line is the way i suggest placing ur CAI hose. Just slight correction from ur pic only hahahaha

If anyone else have any other suggestion do say it ! I may not be correct.. heheh..

Oh, if you're really afraid of water entering .. Then u can either :-

1) Don't place the facing-out part of the CAI all the way out, so water won't masuk. But the question is can air enter? You know your car better :)

2) Or, don't secure the inner-end of the CAI onto your airfilter cover hole so water won't go right in.

hmmm.. since you are going to drill..
DO HOOD SCOOP! best result, really..

well.. i think if u wan. you can find other place to fit ur cai, besides.. if the intake is lower then the output, chance for the water to flow in invery low..

like mine.. its fit there direct sealed into my airbox but no problem for so long laready.. just clean it once a while..

also, try not to have the opening for the CIA to low from the highest point.

eg. air comes in at the bottom of the bumper and needs to travel upwards 400mm to reach its destination.

reasoning for this, is the higher u need to raise the air flow the more resistance. i encounter this daily in my job, doing comercial and industrial air conditioning.

so, some things to keep in mind:

1: keep the CIA duct run as straight as possible, bends are all good, as long as they are smoothe. a simple formular we use at work. if the duck size is 100mm diamater, the bend should not be sharper than twice the diamater. so in this case. 200mm/90 degree bend. but looking at your picture, i dont forsee any problems in the bends.

2: keep the run as flat as possible, this allows less resistance inside the CIA and will have a greater enhancement after the mod. if necessary, try to make a air scoop to push the air upwards before entering the CIA. reason being that air inside the CIA only has one place to go. outside here, air can be manupilated more and scooping the air upwards will have a better effect that running the CIA along the same route.

but remember at the end of the day, the engine will only take a certian ammount of air into the engine. no matter how effective the CIA.

hi .. every master... i am here to thank you all of your opinions...
i already done my DIY CAI ... yeah ... but i havent test run yet.. too tired... hahaha... because i drill the hole myself... save $$$ mah ... hahaha

ok... shared my results to you all ...
I have slant down a bit my pipe... so that the water wont suck in easily...
I bought a transparent pipe... therefore i can see whether got dust or water inside my pipe .. hehe

will ur pipe stand de heat? n 1 more y ur pipe opening is bended 1... shud drill a rounded hole..den put bellmouth or ur custom it using those bottle.. did mine last time ..its from an apple juice bottle

yes... my pipe can stand for 100'C boil water...
i have tested...

The inlet of my pipe.. is bend... actually i am not really drill the hole... i knock and drill... hahaha... because i do not have the exact tools...

Yeah FD3S, putting a bellmouth at the outer part of the CAI would be real nice.. Try to make the hole u drilled bigger so ur pipe wont kena squashed hahaha..

bravo.... nice nice diy.... if possible, diy heatshield for ur extractor as well... i see ur CAI hose is directly above ur extractor... this might be the down point... a heatshield for ur extractor might able to lower the temp of ur CAI hose abit.... hence, u wont have a heated hose which leads to heated air....
