7 maut kemalangan ngeri -- Tiga anggota polis, empat orang awam terbunuh kereta rempuh sekatan jalan raya

PULAU PINANG 18 Sept. - Tujuh termasuk tiga anggota polis, dua daripadanya anggota sukarela dan empat orang awam maut apabila sebuah kereta merempuh sekatan jalan raya di Lebuhraya Jelutong (JE) di sini, awal pagi ini. Kejadian berlaku pada pukul 2.02 pagi ketika anggota polis itu mengadakan sekatan jalan raya di lorong motosikal apabila sebuah kereta Proton Wira yang dipandu laju dari arah Georgetown menghala ke Bayan Lepas hilang kawalan lalu merempuh mereka.

Ketua Polis negeri, Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee berkata, orang awam yang terbunuh ialah pemandu dan dua penumpang kereta Proton Wira itu serta seorang penunggang motosikal yang sedang diperiksa oleh anggota polis berkenaan.

Menurutnya, tiga anggota polis yang maut ialah Lans Koperal Ridzuan Jaafar, 41, dari Balai Polis Jelutong; Konstabel Sukarelawan Polis Shamsuri Mohamed, 30, dan Konstabel Sukarelawan Polis Lok Wan Loo, 35.

Katanya, turut terbunuh ialah pemandu kereta itu, Rokaib Mohd. Amin, 20, dari Gambang, Pahang dan dua penumpang kereta iaitu Azura Romli, 20, dari Pendang, Kedah dan Mohamad Azrul Nayan, 21, dari Pekan, Pahang.

``Seorang lagi penumpang kereta iaitu Mohd. Taufik Abdul Hamid, 20, juga dari Pekan, Pahang selamat dan hanya mengalami kecederaan ringan,'' katanya pada sidang akhbar di Ibu pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Timur Laut di sini, hari ini.

Menurutnya, penunggang motosikal yang maut pula ialah Mohamad Izwan Badri, 19, dari Titi Gantung, Bota, Perak.

Beliau berkata, teman wanita Izwan, Rofisah Ahmad terselamat kerana sebaik berhenti di sekatan jalan raya itu, dia turun dari motosikal dan berdiri di tepi jalan menunggu pemeriksaan selesai.

Katanya, Shamsuri, Rokaib, Azura dan Izwan meninggal dunia di tempat kejadian manakala Ridzuan, Wan Loo dan Mohamad Azrul meninggal dunia di Hospital Pulau Pinang (HPP).

Menurut Christopher, kereta Proton Wira yang dipandu oleh Rokaib dipercayai hilang kawalan selepas dipandu laju dalam keadaan hujan renyai di lorong paling kanan JE.

Ketika itu, menurutnya, sepasukan tujuh anggota polis dari Balai Polis Jelutong sedang mengadakan sekatan jalan raya di laluan khas motosikal berhampiran jejantas Jalan Tengku Kudin sejak pukul 11.30 malam bagi tujuan mencegah jenayah curi motosikal.

Menurut Christopher, akibat gagal dikawal, kereta itu merempuh besi penghadang sisi jalan lalu terbalik dan merempuh tiga anggota polis yang sedang memeriksa seorang penunggang motosikal.

``Empat anggota polis lain yang turut bertugas di sekatan jalan raya itu nampak kereta yang dipandu oleh Rokaib gagal dikawal sebelum merempuh sekatan jalan raya tidak jauh dari jejantas Jalan Tengku Kudin,'' ujarnya.

Katanya, ketika kejadian, kesemua penumpang kereta itu dikatakan dari pusat bandar menghala ke Bayan Lepas untuk makan.

Ditanya sama ada pemandu kereta itu memandu di bawah pengaruh alkohol, beliau berkata, polis masih menunggu keputusan dari Jabatan Kimia.

Beliau memberitahu, kemalangan tersebut yang disifatkannya sebagai paling teruk di Pulau Pinang tahun ini yang melibatkan polis dan orang ramai itu akan disiasat di bawah Seksyen 41 (1) Akta Pengangkutan Jalan 1987.

Sementara itu, Rofisah berkata, kejadian tersebut berlaku begitu pantas.

Dia yang masih terkejut dengan kejadian tersebut dilihat berada dalam keadaan tertekan dan tidak mampu untuk bercakap walaupun dipujuk beberapa kali oleh ahli keluarganya ketika ditemui di bilik mayat HPP.

Ketika Rofisah sedang dipujuk dan ditenangkan oleh anggota keluarganya, dia tiba-tiba pengsan menyebabkan keadaan bertukar menjadi kelam-kabut.

Seven die as ‘sliding’ car hits roadblock

PENANG: A car carrying four people went out of control and ploughed into a roadblock under a flyover killing seven people, including three policemen.

The policemen, a motorcyclist who was having his particulars checked, the driver of the car and two passengers died in the incident that occurred at 2.02am at Jalan Tengku Kudin yesterday.

Penang Chief Police Officer Deputy Comm Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee said the driver lost control of the car after hitting a railing.

“The car turned turtle and slid towards the motorcycle lane knocking down everything in its way,” he told a press conference.

The car screeched to a stop after hitting police lance corporal Ridzuan Jaafar, 41, a police volunteer reserve constable Shamsuri Mohamed, 30, Lok Wan Loo, 35 and motorcyclist Mohamad Izwan Badri, 19. All four died. Shamsuri from Mergong, Kedah,died on the spot.

Mohamad Izwan who was from Perak and worked as a canteen helper in Bayan Lepas also died on the spot. Ridzuan and Lok died in hospital.

The driver Rokaib Mohd Amin, 20, and a passenger Azura Romli, 20, died on the spot while another passenger Mohamad Azrul Nayan died in hospital. Another passenger Mohd Taufik Abdul Hamid, who miraculously survived, managed to crawl out of the mangled car.

The four, who were employees of Penang Ship Building and Construction, were believed to be on their way to have a drink after hanging out at Gurney Drive.

Wan said the roadblock was carried out under the flyover because it was raining. He said police was investigating if there was any element of reckless or dangerous driving.

Roadblock crash after laksa meal
PENANG, Sept 19 Three friends returning home from a laksa meal in Gurney Drive were killed in an accident yesterday.

The trio, who were in a Proton Wira with a friend, crashed into a police roadblock at 2.02am at the Jelutong Expressway near the Tesco Hypermarket.

They were travelling from George Town towards the Penang Bridge when the accident happened. The car overturned after hitting the roadblock. Three policemen and a motorcyclist whom they were checking at the roadblock also died in the crash.

The policemen were Lance Corporal Ridzuan Jaafar, 41, of Alor Star, Kedah; volunteer reserve constable Shamsuri Mohamed, 30, of Mergong, Kedah; and constable Lok Wan Loo, 35, of Paya Terubong, Penang. Those in the Proton who died were driver Rokaib Mohd Amin, 20, of Gambang, Pahang; Mohd Azrul Nayan, 21, of Pekan, Pahang; and his girlfriend Azura Romli, 20, of Pendang, Kedah. The motorcyclist was Mohamad Izwan Badri, 19, of Bota, Perak.

State police chief Datuk Christopher Wan Soo Kee said the car was believed to be speeding and overturned twice at the roadblock when the driver lost control. The speed limit on expressway is 80km per hour.

He said police had set up roadblocks along Jalan Tanjong Tokong, the Jelutong Expressway, the junction of Jalan Bagan Jermal and Jalan Kelawei, Lebuh Light and the junction of Jalan Greenhall and Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah to check on stolen motorcycles.

Wan said the road was slippery due to heavy rain. The three men in the car were working for a ship-building company while Azura was employed at a factory in Bayan Lepas. Mohamad Izwan was a canteen assistant at a factory while the policemen had just started work two days ago after completing six months’ training.

The only surviving passenger of the car was Mohd Taufik Abdul Hamid, 20. He sustained minor cuts and bruises and was treated at the Penang Hospital.

Wan said the victims died on the spot except Mohd Azrul who died in hospital. Several motorcycles from the Jelutong police station parked near the roadblock were also damaged," he said.

'Too late to save them'
"I heard a policeman shouting lari. A car suddenly skidded out of control. We could not do anything to save them."

Ropishah Ahmad, 21, who witnessed the accident, said within seconds, the car smashed into the policemen, and her boyfriend, Mohamad Izwan Badri.

Ropishah could not speak further as she collapsed at the mortuary. When she regained consciousness later, Ropishah screamed Izwan’s name several times.

Ropishah and Izwan were travelling on a motorcycle when they were stopped by policemen during the roadblock. As the policemen checked out Izwan, Ropishah stood beside the motorcycle.

Ropishah said she met Izwan two months ago. They were heading to her house in Permatang Damar Laut when the accident happened.

Yeah, agree....kill ourselve can edi, dun kill innocent ppl....Just hope we can drive with carefully although go fast....yesterday i oso almost hit that old man, that oldman take over my car...manatau that Wira infront of the old man brake will get the trafic light turn orange light....so that old man hit the Wira's back.... then me on the road the old man fall down....if i go fast, sure the old man die edi!! Lucky Lucky din hit ppl die!!~ N too bad for the old man, just praying for him can recover fast coz his leg broken!!~ :frown:

See kids, that's why you need driver aids such as ABS and ESP. Would have avoided something like this from happening.

And again I stress, speed had nothing to do with it, it's is the one behind the wheel. Get that into you thick skulls will ya.

nothing personal to the family and the dead, but the driver was stupid IMO. i dont mean to believe everything the paper says, but the survivor himself admitted that the driver panicked and was doing 100kph on a wet road. i also deem him inexperienced and jumpy coz he shouldnt have panicked unless he was doing something very wrong. the thing is, if he was really aware and driving properly, he would've seen that the roadblock wasnt in HIS IMMEDIATE PATH. why the hell wasnt he paying attention?? if the location was after a blind corner, then i take back my statement (need verification from penang members). when death comes, it comes but in terms of fault, i stand with the driver making a serious error in awareness and judgement.

that said, i dont mean any disrespect to the dead and their families. facts are facts. my condolences.

yup, i agree. the roadblock might havfe been setup in a hidden location, because the police said that they were looking for stolen bikes. so as usual they will do it in a hidden location.
poor guy must have been speeding, shocked to see the block and slammed on the brakes to slow down.
what a waste of life. :(

my opinion on the matter:

from what it looks like:
it was a pretty straight and clear roadblock, under the bridge cos it's raining + bridges have lights to illuminate the undersides!

in a police road block, they use the blue-blinkers, and damn those are bright as heck!
and not to mention the officers usually wear the reflective vests, so.......

straight road, not suprise road block, looks like driver's fault here.

sorry mates, but 4 ppl died because someone reacted badly to a mere roadblock.
if you didnt do anything wrong, why react that way?

maybe: he had bad experiences as what so many forummers here bitch about their own experiences.
but maybe also, didnt you guys gave them(cops) alot of excuses AND reasons to book you?
