Cefiro has many problems?, not exactly.., high fuel consumption? = yes !. The Cefiro's in
Malaysia has two variants of engines, RB20E and RB20DE. The 1994 is the last batch and
should have the RB20DE engine in it. In Japan Cefiro's have also have the RB20DET engine which has higher HP outputs due to it being a turbo charged engine. There are plenty of half-cuts in Malaysia which has the RB20DET in them and they are pretty cheap too and if I were you I would convert the NA engine to a turbo charged one, a little higher in fuel consumption but well worth it.

The problematic areas of the Cefiro is that the roof-top gets a fair amount of rust in them after years of usage. Water condensation on the under-side of the roof-top during over-night parkings causes this to happen, so if you have a shaded parking lot for it then it should be ok for a much longer period before the rusts shows up. The other nuisance would be the interior plastic trimmings, they get very tacky due to our hot climate. I am not aware of other weak areas of this car, others can comment further on this.

my RB20DET damn good leh. :D of course u need some tweaking here and there... but now getting very good mileage.

Lotsa people will tell u RB20 high fuel consumption la.. this la.. that la.. have they actually driven or owned the car? it's a good thing u asked in here coz most of the owners of cefiros are in here also. :D

RB20DET is just nice for balanced between everyday driving and occasional weekend sprints/drifts. :D parts are abundance and cheap... even halfcuts are as cheap as RM1800. ;)

Depends how the engine setup is. Generally consumption the RB20det is good..considering that you're firing 6 cyclinders not 4!

You can tune it to be very economical and if your foot is not ' heavy' then no problem lar. If you have an SAFC II then you can have two fueling maps...one economical for normal driving and the other map for rich heavy throttle driving! :D

Bcos I am driving a E36 325 now, damm kachao.... spend alot already

Half cut: RM2400 (market price, can get cheaper if you know someone)
Worksmanship: RM1500 (excluding installing the Skyline dashboard)
New parts (cables, wiring, timing belt, coolant, lubricant): RM500
JPJ approve: RM200 (maximum)

Total: RM4600 (make it RM5000 just in-case)

Make sure you get a good condition Engine. Try to find one that has the lowest mileage, check the cams for wear.
Make sure you change all vital belts, plugs, use good oil and ori spares. Generally the RB20 is a very strong engine, just take care of it and it will last you. Get the transplant done then you can slowly upgrade whatever you want in stages...

i'd suggest around 5k to 7k budget would be sufficient. yes.. it's really that cheap. :D

btw, i could source some halfcuts for u, A31 or R32 with RB20det if u want. Price? as low as RM2000 to as high as RM8000 fully loaded RB25DET A31. ;) hehehe

like a31gtst said, it's vital to change the belts, alternator and water pump. other than that, you're good to go.

oh... did i mentioned that i could help with installation as well..? hehehe.. hmm.. must do one package la like this... halfcut + belts + wear/tear parts + install dashboard + 4pot/2pot + labor. hehehe :D

can fit safc2 on NA cars? i heard not much difference but turbo should be better (significant difference)...

depends on what sensor type... safc can be fitted to most engines n/a or turbo. Of course it would be more beneficial for turbo charged cars but for any car that has upgraded anything to do with fueling like fuel pump, injectors, fuel regulator...then thats when the safc comes in handy. For turbo cars it makes sure u dont just dump fuel all the time and lose power...just as well it allows u to tune the fueling so that you dont run too lean at higher revs and detonate your engine!

If i'm not mistaken MAP type sensors dont work wth the safc, cant remember pls correct me if i'm wrong.

safc can get 2nd hand for reasonable price
safc2 abit more pricey but got 2 fuel maps and knock reading.

If youre on a budget...there are relatively good 2nd units out in the market. Else new units would cost approx above 1k
