I drive a 95' 1.6L Sentra B14 (M) and recently my engine gasket has burnt from a overheat. Engine oil transferring into my radiator water and vice versa. Some kind of goo is forming in the radiator and the engine oil is also discolouring. Mechanic advice to scrap engine and get a new one.

Question 1: Can my engine be salvaged?!!

Question 2: What other engines out there is compatible with my if i decide to upgrade a bit. (rough cost involved would be helpful)

Hope any sifu out there can help........

Just get a halfcut of the same car model la. Should be still available. If u are not into performance and just to replace the old engine, then get the same one.

Or, you can try asking for Sentra 2000 model the N16 with CVT. See whether it fits into your engine bay or not. Let me know the updates ok !

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback guys. My mechanic will try to do a top overhaul on the existing engine and see if that works.

He says that lately JPJ has made it really problematic when it comes to engine swapping. Lots of Puspakom testing and paper work so he'll try to avoid it if possible. *unless someone can find me a "loophole" around this.....

Actually i've seen quite alot of these US webpages with SR20DE engines swapped into the B14. Any experience here guys?

Otherwise, keep the ideas coming guys. Engine swap still an option until another solution is found!!!

just go for sr16vvl la no need change just sign tat u already change engine bzos same cc .. just plug and play the sr16vvl ... at kl also got people swap the sr20det in b14 not now la... now is 1.6 maximun to 1.8 la...

Have been digging around about this sr16vvl and seen several comments about it. First it's a bit on the expensive side, rm 7K+ with installation. Any up to date quotes??

Also, hard to find this engine locally it seems and also the parts to fix it.

I guess jumping to a sr20 will probably kill my fuel consumption anyway. will try to keep it to 1.8 and below.

wah 7k with installation?? ok what... i found sr16 neo vvl oni halfcut already 6.5k liao la.. urs including installation and all 7k go for it bro! :) but if u dowan still got sr18 :) i found 1 in sunway there a kedai potong.. letting go for 2.8k but it's 4wd.. gotta lock the 2 front axel :) or ca18det.. dunno can fit anot all this engine.. just informing :) the last time i checked ca18det goin for 2.5k dunno the price got naik anot.. the last time i check was 2months ago..

if i'm in your situ, i'll go for the SR16DE route to take advantage of the road tax. any more than that you will be paying the full rate.

yeah that's a point also.. since now anything below 1.6cc is given a cheaper road tax.. sr16 would be a rather good choice.. unless u wanna overhaul that is :)

can swap to SR16VE, SR20VE, SR20DE, SR20DET, SR18DE (Y10). CA18 2 old oledi. For SR20DET u hav 2 find the SR20DE Gearbox Coz Silvia version is FR and Pulsar Version is 4WD.

I guess keeping to a 1.6L engine would be good advantage for the road tax and JPJ registration. So far everyone seems to suggest a change to the SR16. Anyone out there that has any experience with this swap?

There's still the problem of maintaining the engine if parts are hard to find and are expensive!!! Any SR16 users out there that can share their experiences?!!

Starting to wonder if I can take the increase in engine power. Balls will surely shrink if I cannot handle the Hp increase!

The end.....

Thanks for all the advice but unfortunately my mechanic which is a family friend convinced me that keeping to the original GA16 is the best. No hassle with JPJ and within budget.

He has however changed all the hoses and seals to make sure the car will run for at least 5 more years. all in should be slightly more than rm 3K.....

So, no zoom zoom zoom from a SR16.... but who knows..... as long as i keep this car there is still a chance...

since i have to keep the car for a couple of years more will look to add a rear spoiler, lucino front bumper and maybe a stabiliser bar. will start a thread to look for this stuff soon cause need sifu advice again.

hi S-B14,

my engine ga16 also problem last year.
i did my overhaul too in january. changed rear abs, changed all the engine hoses plus changing clutch (original nissan). all cost me around 2k.

till now, engine run smoothly. mineral oil still as clean at 5k mileage.
even my alternator changed cost me 150bucks with installation.

if u not into performance, i reckon u repair this engine as it gives u a reliable day to day ride.

cheers

psychoacid,
Thanks for the input. been searching around and got to know that the ga16 has this overheating problem. If only I knew this earlier! So for all those GA16 users out there! beware, do not continue to drive if temperature goes up !! you WILL regret it!

i'm embarking on a new "small" project to "pimp" up my car at the moment. just strut bar, bumper and spoiler kinda thing right now. in the process of sourcing the lucino bumper right now and probably go to ultraracing for the strut bar. will post updates if anyone is interested....

the overheating prob caused by leakage of the waterpump hose if im not mistaken. this is very common problem for sentra b14.
just check or change often.

gud luck to you in sourcing out lucino stuff. mind letting me know if you can find lucino front grill and u doesnt want it. been looking for this grill quite a while edi

n_chun,
good to hear you survived the engine overheat. another B14 owner told me that his survived as well and he thinks that it was due to his highgrade engine oil. he was quite lucky as well because the engine was smoking and couldn't restart.

quite interested to hear which potong shop you go to. still very very new to this and don't know which shop to go to. which part of kepong is this by the way? not to familiar with the area there. Thanks!

so many area at the kepong got this kind of bumber.. if u go to buy don't buy this bumber go to buy the look like skyline33 bumber so nice last time the boss cost me rm400 to 450 with front grill, headlight, signal light, and bumber. if u really want u go to kepong ask 1 by 1 and u will saw many b14 bumber

GA16DE is very prone to over heating due to the following reasons :

1) Water pump kit or seal. Suggest you change coolant vigilantly follow interval as per manual. Use specified coolant as per your manual.

2) Radiator top hair line crack. Water pressure will reduce and temp will rise. Dont wait. Go see your mechanic to have it changed.

Otherwise the GA is a quiet and reliable engine.
