The other day, a chap was asking me what, in my mind would be an ideal sports car. The Elise, being too raw for my tastes...got ditched in favour of the FD.

His response?

"Whoa, fuel consumption damn high man..."

"Why do you say that?"

"Oh...heard from people"

*saru-kun faints*

Putting the "heard from people" school of thought aside, far too many people are looking at the rotary's fuel consumption by using the capacity / litre ratio. 13B, being 1.3 litre, warrants a low FC in most people's mind. Sadly the opposite is true.

BUT...if we were to look at it using the horsepower / litre ratio, you'll find the most cars producing 280ps guzzles about the same amount of fuel...

Data from Volume 24 of Option Fans magazine, the fuel consumption of the following cars in 10:15 mode, measured in km/l:

Subaru WRX GC8 2 door - 10.2
Honda NSX - 9.0
Toyota Supra - 9.0
Mitsubishi EVO 6 - 9.7
Nissan GT-R 34 - 8.1
Mazda RX-7 FD3S - 7.2 (slightly sceptical with this, but just copying)

Obviously, it should be only taken for discussion's sake as all these are on paper. Real world results will depend on many factors, driving style being one out of many.

I'd like to hear how everyone out there thinks about this.

Cheers

-and passing by Links today, spotted a pre-99 red FD. I'm in love-

*EDIT* Hope someone could explain what is meant by 10:15 mode. Thanks in advance

I'm getting about 7km - 9km per liter. Ofcourse not WOT all times but I would say mix driving mode.

went to ipoh and back with 1 full tank of petrol.. still got time to go pick up groceries in d morning before filling up

My fuel consumption

This is a really cool comparison - well done!

OK back to business....I used to get about 9km per litre but now i get about 6km/L

But hey don't get me wrong... I am happy coz since all my mods i now have an extremely serious fast & very serious rocket that just requires point & shoot >> excessive amounts of power is just fantastic!!!!!!!!

The extra fuel burden is worth every ringgit - yipppeee bring on my rotary drug tomorrow >>> errr was someone saying earlier rotary fanatics don't care about about FC??? I might be one of them yup I think i am. 8-)

BUT this discussion and the stats is still very good info to those that just must know - and according to your copied figures speaks volumes for me and further disproves the *bad* talk AGAIN.

Ahahaha...I would say most petrolheads don't given much thought to FC during WOT runs, just the aftermath would be: "Shit....I didn't just do that, did I?"

Just a mention though, I believe this is true that when you own a high performance vehicle, stop ranting about high fuel consumption. ^_^

13btt, thanks hehehe

Cheers

I want a ride hehehe...350 hp sounds inviting

my ride stock FC, drift in go-kart. average rev 5k rpm. max 9k rpm. RM10, about 5L, only do around 20km. double of my 4age NA.

hi my current fc is running too rich... and getting only under slightly under 200 for my ride but i am happy.... it just the tuning but some parts are spoilt so i gotta rectify b4 sending for tuning...

worry about FC?? dont get a RE la.. get proton or something that saves fuel.. why not a bicycle??

True RE enthusiast doesn't care about FC.. all they care is their car, their engines and the enjoyment of their drives.. its the adrenaline rush that makes it worth every cent and drop of fuel.

my 50 sen.
