Hi all sifu and bro, i'm new to ICE and i have bought a monoblock amp recently (prokick dg-800). Now saving money for my subwoofer, but still haven decided which brand to buy. So need some suggestion from you all. I'm abit towards SPL and my budget below RM1k for 1 pair 12" sub.

my car is waja, planning to use original hu and the speaker. sound seems ok( cause not enough to buy new one yet )

these are few of brands in my mind:
-MTX
-boschmann (the one mike is selling)
-Rockford

I prefer to buy a reliable sub so i would not need to visit the accessory shop often to doing maintainance or other. So within 1k any better sub i can get other than these 3 brands?

and what different between double and single voice coil magnet?

1 pair for 1k? so each sub around 500? hmmm...

out of the 3 brands i vote for mtx first, then RF and lastly BM. choose which sub has the rms to match with your amp's output. if u can give us the power specs of each sub and your amp we can give a proper match.

a dvc sub can cheat the amp to supply it twice the power than if it was a svc sub.

1K is solely for the sub or hv to factor in sub box? the box will easily costing RM150-300 depending on the dimension ..

Ever considered Kicker products?

Just some reference for all about the prokick DG-800

Power output in RMS

4 ohm = 250 rms
2 ohm = 400 rms
1 ohm = 800 rms

This info will greatly determine the purchase of your 2 subs, and its wiring options.

1K for two subs? Hmm...

Cheers

Is your amp 800watt rms? If yes then you will need 2 12" 400watt sub. If you use this setup, you have to add speakers and amp for your front and rear speakers, if not you will only listen to your sub's bass only. Safe more money first, then do he project once thru.

for 800rms he will need 2 units 400W rms DVC 4ohm sub, for under 500 each ....erm a bit hard, but if u can get one, go ahead. also running an amp at 1ohm would be a real strain on the car battery, make sure the alternator is a strong one, not recommended for small cars.

better to run at 2ohm, much easier to get 2 units 200W SVC 4ohm subs for under 500 each, should be quite a few around....

Yup

Always try to avoid going down to 1 ohm. Power will be drawing like crazy.

Yup the best is to go with what zenn advises, find 2 SVC subs between 150-200rms, and run them at 2 ohms. That should be just nice.

Unless you plan to change the whole power options in ur car ie. battery, alternator, power wirings, etc, then you can run into 1 ohm. Then again, there's so much more bad than good in running subs at 1 ohm.

For rm500 each sub SVC, you are open to a few very good choices.

Cheers

i personally not impressed with the MTX and RF lower models of subs. They are simply overpriced and proformance wise is not bang for the buck. Yes MTX and RF are famous with their subs but that the high end of their subs namely the MTX 9500 and the jackhammer and the RF power series. But the lower end of MTX and the punch series are rather disapointing.

I will recommened 2X 12" CVR. It cost arounf RM600 - RM650 per subs (maybe you can increase your budget a bit) place them in a 4 cu^3 ported box tuned to 30 Hz. I am sure i will give you lots of low end extension. And later want some SPL just cut the port shorter.

Your amp should be enough to power that.

My personal option is rather than you go with 2 X 12" why not go for a single 15". for 1K you can buy the new Adire Tempest 15" which is loud.

xD i forgot the box hehe sry sry. I think i would spend about another 1k for box+capacitor+all wiring and intallation fees

bububann @
Thanks alot for the infor ^^

kyheng @
:( never thought of adding speaker so fast (tight budget) cause my friend say my waja tweeter not bad already so i might wait for future upgrade.
if i did not max out the volume it wont just hear the bass only is it? or can it adjust so the bass wont that strong?
^^ cant wait to add some bass first

Zenn @
mike_lim is selling the BMB dvc 12" sub below around RM900 (that is what i consider to buy, seems can tahan lama xD)
but seems like svc sub would be more suitable for me. :/ i very lazy to visit the acc shop to repair this and that really.

appleyard @
is the 12" cvr from kicker? @@ dont know much on the box also, might just tell the accesory fello to get one for me. ^^ increase abit budget doestn matter as long its reliable and quality product
:/ i thought of getting 15" also but wonder if that can fix inside waja boot?
the cd changer have to be removed then (blocked).
:/ would this adire tempest provide good quality output as 2x12" subbie? and my amp can use for this sub?

^^'' sorry i really newbie to ICE
Thanks again for the reply from all bro and sifu

Oo one more question. the front and rear speaker bro kyheng mentioned=component set? how many component set required to add in waja to give good sound quality? i saw some ppl saying adding two comp set in some forum

there is one sub selling at brother's HQ. selling price ~RM700 for kenwood or was it pioneer. claimed to have 2000W output. any opinion for that? worth the value?

12" sub. i think it was kenwood, then again, i could be wrong.

If say the volume for sub is 0-40, then the volume will be around 5-10 before it overtakes your original speakers.
The RF component I using it, buty from Lelong also, better than other brand speakers, but bare in mind that this speakers is year 2002 model not latest. I bought it at rm299.

John, you can only buy HU from brothers, not more than that. You will regret if you buy other things.

Nolah, if you buy from them, where you want to install? As they only know how to install HU, not other things.

Bro have a look at the buy sell section. A pair of 12" Bravoxx Subs is up for sale with box, good price.

Rated at 400RMS each, just nice for your prokick. However, it will drive ur amp down to 1 ohm lah.

Your choice dude!

Cheers

wah that bravox ive heard before, good buy, even had a good review in Car Audio & Electronics magazine few months back, but better in a larger box...

i believe it will depend on the amp gain.

i doubt prokick amp will give u 800w rms.
2 x 12" will displace more air than 1 x 15" unless that 15" is high excursion sub.
IMHO for that budget, any reputable sub will do. But u must choose which one to go for. SPL or SQ? If SPL, find those with higher Fs (rough guide).

is boschman ok? never heard it and never seen it discussed in US forum. As usual, i doubt it can go loud.

Rockford vs. kicker? i find kicker is cheaper.

buy kenwood if it is cheap. It is more than RM3++ then better look for others eg. Kicker ex which is about RM3++ (now not sure) and loud but boomy & cant go low.

SPL King Kippo has spoken! Heed his words!

Good tip as always, Kippo.

Eh kicker now `cheaper' oledi lah bro, the Comp (not the VRs ya) only selling 'bout RM350 i think, rated 150RMS 4 ohm SVC.

Ultimately, using 2 pcs will bring about 300RMS at 2 ohms, which the prokick `claims' to be able to dish out 400RMS at the same impedance. A fine suit, I think, with still headroom of power to spare.

From what I know these babies (the Comp series) nowadays can play both SQ and SPL, depending on enclosure built. The RFs still maintain their SPL superiorty by maintaining high Fs.

Cheers

Yes, amp gain. Basicly 2 things can control the sub volume, from front(HU) or rear(amp gain). Amp gain more HU work less, possible of noise, might overtake original speakers sound, HU volume turn higher, HU work more, as original speakers follow HU volume so it might blow the speakers on long run.
The bottom line : using high power amp and sub without changing other speakers is not maximising the system, as the sub's volume(amp gain or HU volume gain) cannot turn too high.

I had read in a book that to calculate a proper sub power, you'll need to know what is your amp ditching out for the front.
Example,
If you have a 4CH amp powering your front at 50W RMS.
The sub power that you need is: (50 + 50 ) X 1.5 = 150WRMS.
I personally do not understand how that formula comes out. The reason that was provided in the book is that, the lower frequencies has more power than the higher frequencies. There was a power distribution table across the frequency but I can't remember that. I will post it here once I manage to get that.

If you still want to use your original speakers and HU, there is another suggestion, try using bass blockers in serial with the stock speakers. This will release the burden of bass from your HU and speakers. In a sense, this will enable you to play louder with less distortion and better clarity. But, I am not sure how true will that be on an OEM speaker from Proton :D Bass will be channeled to your amp and then sub.

Hope this helps.
