A GATHERING of Mat Rempit scheduled next month will now be held in January.
This is to enable the organisers, Putra Umno, and the police to provide better planning.
Certain quarters had alleged that the expected gathering of 50,000 bikers for the so-called Putera Umno Motor Carnival was a waste of time and could spark off untoward incidents.
Movement chief Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim told Berita Harian that the decision to defer the event was taken at an Umno Youth meeting chaired by Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein on Tuesday.
Umno Youth felt that the organisers might not be able to handle the large crowd without the help of the police.
Abdul Azeez said Hishammuddin did not want the programme to backfire. He said the carnival was aimed at drawing the Mat Rempit, or illegal street racers, to become Umno Putera members as well as to join the Rakan Cop corps and be the “eyes and ears” of the Government
