i need to find out how to diffrentiate between evo 1 and evo 3 engine? lets say its an evo 1 but the prevous owner upgraded the intercooler and all to make it look like evo 3, how to tell? got any number on the engine? the ap is not reliable so cant depend on it.

thanks.

engine is all same 4G63 series. on EVO 1 to 3 the timing belt is on the left side (same like wira) but beginning EVO 4 to present it is reversed (like Waja).

not much difference on the looks.... very similar. only power output differs.

VR4 1988 200bhp
EVO 1 220bhp
EVO 2 250bhp
EVO 3 280bhp (restricted)
EVO 4-8 280bhp (restricted)

except EVO 8 FQ330 has 330bhp (made by Ralliart UK).

should ask at Mitsubishi sifus at the forum.

i wonder y u asked and abt to answer , until my bro (2nd) and told me abt it..damn it...

it is an agreement between the authorites in Japan to resrict it. same goes to Subaru Impreza (also 280bhp) although we know there are more powerful versions especialy in the UK.

want to know why all Japanese cars have 180km/h max speedometer? part of the understanding laa....

and in most of the cars too... buzzer warning once they reach 105km/h to warn the driver thay are exceeding 100km/h.

ha ha ha ha sighh....

How to differentiate EVO 1/2/3?

Check the body code:

EVO 1 --CD9A-SNGF
EVO 2 - CE9A-SNGF
EVO 3 - CE9A-SNGF

EVO 1,2 turbo no. 49178 0145
EVO 3 turbo no 49178 0147
EVO 1 and 2 : intercooler size r same
EVO 3 : intercooler bigger than EV0 1/2
EVO 1,2,3 ECU number 7701 (all same)

EVO 1
1992
MITSUBISHI LANCER CD9A
Engine: 4G63 (2000 cc, I-4, Turbo 250 hp)
Layout: Front / 4WD

EVO 2
1994
MITSUBISHI LANCER CE9A
Engine: 4G63 (2000 cc, I-4, Turbo 260-270 hp)
Layout: Front / 4WD

EVO 3
1995
MITSUBISHI LANCER CE9A
Engine: 4G63 (2000 cc, I-4, Turbo 260-270 hp)
Layout: Front / 4WD

U can also check

1) Engine head code beside distributor.

EVO1 - G6K - 1 or 2
EVO 2 - G6K - 3
EVO 3 - G6K - 4 or 5

2) turbo

EVO 1 - 45
EVO 2 - 46
EVO 3 - 47

3) ECU code

E1 - 7701
E2 - 2468
E3 - 2364

4) Piston ( if engine dismantle)

EVO1 - H1
EVO2 - H2
EVO3 – EV

* Most manufacturer rate the power on engine ( it read more horsie - good
marketing)...expect 20-30hp loss on wheels. Bear in mind, that the HP
also loss to transmission around 10% - 15% for 2WD and 20% - 25% for four
wheels drive. This is the norms at least for Mitsubishi engine.
