how to check boost leaking on the turbo exhaust manifold?

i just fix back my stock manifold with a tial wastegate, now my car very lag.

i suspect that theres some boost leak at the exhaust manifold but dunno where.so how can i check it?

cant see any? hairline cracks pun takde? on the manifold? turbine housing? none?

okie, a mystery indeed.. were u using a banana previously? and describe the lagg u encounter bro, was it like kaw2 lagg or does it just feel laggy COMPARED to ur previous setup? r u using bigger turbine?

hm.... try to check around your manifold. shld have some certain spot with little carbon (black black) built if got leak. this is wat my fren told me

bro, if use soap hor, i mean its water based. once u put the soap on manifold, dun it almost dry up instantly?

xtremeleo:i used a custom made banana last time.normally will peak boost around 3.5krpm.
stock td05 on evo4 engine.now i switch back to stock manifold with a new 38mm tial(1 bar spring).now the car boosting 0.8 bar till 7krpm.only will peak at 4.2krpm.manifold no crack because i check it througly before fixing it

normality78:yeah,will black but it will take sometimes.my fren teach me to spray some silver paint on those spot that i suspected got leaking so can see the carbon easily

mrbear:did u try b4?if not let me tell u.it wont work, because the manifold will hot once the car start so u cant really see where it was leaking.it will work on the intake side with this method but not exhaust side

so, ur lagg isnt from the turbine only, ya? y did u replace the banana wit the std manifold bro? dat was one if the thing dat can reduce lagg, what made u think ur turbine's housing is the culprit ya?

but a totally stock evo will peak boost at around 3.5krpm

i switch back to stock because i want to sell my custom made manifold, going to change turbine so sell my manifold and use the stock manifold at the moment

Is your Tial wastegate leaking your boost away? Since that's your newest addition, best to start with that.

Your symptoms sound similar to a faulty wastegate that's stuck open.

Assuming you are using the stock turbo and still have your original actuator, block off the Tial and hook up the original piping to the internal wastegate to see if it solves your problem. If it doesn't, well, at least you've eliminated one possibility :D

lan_evo bro,

could that be the diff between ur banana manifold vs stock? i mean dun banana style manifold should be better thn stock hence it cause quick turbo respond thn stock manifold?

lan evo : understood, and what iam gonna say has been said by cannonfodder. most likely ur wastegate open a lil bit bit when off boost hence the lagg dat u r feeling, do check it out.

cannonfodder : nice pointer btw, hoho..

will it be the 1 bar spring from the tial (can only feel the power after the wastegate open at 1 bar...)? If the turbine housing cracked, i'm sure you will get some whistle sound or some people say aeroplane sound when the turbo spools.
Please dun flame me if I'm wrong coz kinda new to this.

1Bar spring means that's the base wastegate pressure without any additional boost control, which means that the Tial wastegate should stay closed up to 1Bar.

The stock boost control solenoid on the IV should bleed away about .2Bar so lan evo should be able to hit 1.2Bars even if he didn't have any additional hardware installed. Worst case, assuming that he's using a boost control line without the stock grommet, he should still get about 1Bar of boost since that's what the Tial is rated to hold.

So, possibilities are that the Tial spring isn't actually holding the 1Bar it claims or that the wastegate iself hasn't been installed properly.

HOME made leak tester!

hello guys,
i see that u have problems of finding vacum leaks or exhuast leaks, u can build a leak taster pretty easy u need a air compressor with a regulator, a few air fittings an different size pvc caps for the intake side an cap the exhuast side .. just tap the intake side pvc cap an plug in the air compressor fitting an pressurize the system to about 50psi an open the throttle body.. then listen for leaks...

thanx a lot henri, ur info will help a lot of poeple wit dis kinda problem :)

found the problem.the lag cause by the wrong modification on the stock manifold

the wasgegate installer drilled a hole inside the manifold so that all the exhaust gas will vent out to the wastegate outlet when hit peak boost.but actually it was not needed to drill that way.it cause the exhaust gas not divided properly, only one side of the separated twin scroll turbine was blow by the exhaust gas.
