Are car stereo amplifiers necessary?

I have a rather simple sounds system in my car.. and I don't think I'll be spending alot for quality components.. but I have a question..

Do I need an amplifier? Would the overall sound quality be good?

I have a Kenwood headunits

Speakers I use Sony Explode... in the front 6 inch speakers/tweeters and crossover while the back are 5-inch xplode speakers..

if your front is a component set (separate mids, tweeters & passive crossover) then adding an amp would most probly improve the sound quality, bcoz the head unit power is too little to push it for u to hear its full potential. if it is the coaxial type (mid & tweet together) then HU power should be anough and adding an amp wont be much different.
