Hi,
I'm new to this forum. Got the latest Hyudnai Coupe with the following specs :
2.0Ltr Beta II engine with variable valve timing
4-speed auto transmission with shiftronic
10.1 compression ration
dynoed for 109hp at the wheel....that's stock standard engine.

This is what I've done so far to my car :
Broquet fuel catalyst (in-line & in-tank system)
K&N CAI
Iridium plugs
UNICHIP piggyback ECU..............dynoed and got 121hp at the wheel.

I'm seriously considering to go turbo. Visworks Auto Lab in JB suggested 0.6bar boost, with intercooler, auxhillary A/T cooler, extra injector & the rest of the turbo parts. PISTONS & A/T WILL BE KEPT STOCK STANDARD.That'll give 160hp at the wheel. Various hyundai websites I've checked with said my stock engine can stand up to 300hp without internal mods and A/T can stand up to 180hp at the wheel. I'm afraid of reliability problems. How my stock engine compression ratio of 10.1 be affected in terms of performance if I go turbo?Any possibility of pistons misfiring? I really need some good advice/suggestions. Don't want to turbo it then spend lots of $$ and time repairing & cursing at the mechanic. Thanks :(

ohhhhh so fast got unichip?
means if u do your turbo upgrade u gotto get the turbo module for unichip too ;)

btw if u say ur gb can reach 180whp then thats it. 180 is ur limit. don't think ur engine can take 300bhp means u shud hit 300... i dun think its as easy as that.

why would hyundai make such a strong engine for a NA that has only 100+bhp stock... i'm sure they're not going to incure the extra cost for u guys to upgrade the engine. :D

a bolt on will be good ;) like viswork says 0.6 shud be about the limit of most stock NA engines. consider the high comp. ratio. u're gonna get lotsa problem at higher boosts. about 160-180 horses shudn't be a problem.

and yes a A/T oil cooler is necessary especailly when u're gonna stress the tranny like that. MUST!!! its only 50 bucks per oil cooler from chop shops. custom make the oil pipes and wallah! don't need lotsa cash for that! ;)

i am a hyundai coupe owner too...i asked the mech ans he said there is lots of custom works that needed to be done...can iknow what are all the parts that are necessary for installing a bolt on turbo? cna give a list arr? thatnks!!

cheehonglee...your 2002 hyundai coupe got 109 hp oni meh?
how come? the 1997 hyundai in stock hp got 140hp..or maybe i am wrong...but how can your model only has 109 hp? btw your model damm cun man...i am planning to install a turbo kit into my car...but the thing is i really dont know what are the necessary parts, what is needed and what is not... :( so i hope in this forum i`ll know the answer...:)

i tot hyundai and mitsu share the same technology? if that's the case.. just drop in VR4 RS engine inside with 240hp as stock power.. better lor. Summore cost wise better than having a bolt on turbo.

ezwong, the hyundai's engine layout different mah.. it's like the waja, if wanna put in VR4 must put it in the other way around.

best engine for a swap would be evo4 and up engines.

or you can always try SR20 and 3sgte... but these 2 engines don't look very comfortable sitting in the hyundai.

haha he wanted turbo bolt on lahhh not engine swap ;)

items needed for bolt on:
1. custom made manifold
2. custom made downpipe
3. turbo
4. intercooler
5. extra injectors
6. piggyback/full ECU
7. i/c pipings
8. ?!? i dunno already lah :D

To rsctan........my car was dynoed at 109wheel horsepower lah. I know on paper the engine is 138hp. After the modification I did so far, I got 121wheel horsepower. That's about 163hp lor. If u want the list, CcL already mentioned it.

To the rest of the guys.....so boosting up till 160 wheel horsepower is save, is it?? I only damn scared misfiring then got knocking. Would appreciate it if u guys can contribute more. Cheers

Hi CcL,

The UNICHIP I've got can control turbo, NOS and extra injector. That's not a problem. Just have to reprogram it after turbo set up.

cheehonglee....seeing as ur UNICHIP can control all of the above, i suggest u go for turbo, nos AND extra injector....hahahaha....after tat....all u need is a babe in the car next to u....pimpin ride ;)

ezwong,

if i have not mistaken u haf a gsr engine rite? out of curiousity, y diden u just plonk in a vr4-240 instead? stock got 240 vs a gsr's 190 (isit?). althou vr4 is older, it is about rm1K cheaper with more power.

Monster,
Initially I was considering between the VR4-RS, GSR and Mivec engine for a transplant. But between all the engines, GSR is the only engine that doesn't need any engine mounting modification and it's proven to be more reliable compared to the VR4 engine. Furthermore.. my original engine capacity is only 1.5.. upgrading to 2L will be more troublesome. Roadtax is cheaper too. So the end the story short.. it's my mech that found a good working condition GSR engine b4 I could say 'wah lao' .. that makes me drop in the engine. =)

cheehonglee,
yeap i know... i'm geting my unichip this week too!! wakakaka lets see if i can hit 200whp or 250bhp :D thats the limits of my gearbox... then it would incinerate <_<

CHLee,

I think Viswork JB is very reliable tuner and they seem to know wat they're doing. They got so many bolt on turbo cars running around without major issues.

Bolt on turbos don kill the engine. Poor tuning and overboosting does.

urmm..anyone can explain what is hp on wheel means? ehehe..soli arr..cheehonglee.. :D
urmm..bout the extra injector thingy...where do you plug the extra injector? do you need like an extra somethign for it?

wats the difference between whp n bhp?wheel horse power n brake horse power, wats the difference?

whp is the hp at the wheels
after loss of power thru gearbox and drivetrain...
hehehe

xtra injector is normally for turbo cars... its plugged to the intercooler piping between the throttle body and the intercooler.
some people like it just before the TB but some like it further away so the fuel is more dispersed.

CCL: U say your mechanic is soon to be an authorised unichip dealer? Mind giving me his contact? I'd like to have a chat.

ok,so tht's whp.thanks for the explanation man :)
then wat about bhp?brake horse power, wat does it mean then?
