Hi Guys,

I have a problem that is really bugging me. My RAV4 has very bad idle. The idling jumps up and down, sometimes it dies off. Sigh. I have already spent RM500 this month. I have serviced my TB three times these two weeks. Problem is still there.

I have tried looking at the TB, ignition coils, spark plugs, cables. No avail. I am getting the injectors looked into this weekend.

However, I noticed that the problem comes to play when the Econo mode kicks in, i.e. when the engine is warmed up.

I am looking for a good Toyota garage that can run a computer diagnostics on the engine. UMW refuses to do it cos my car is a grey import. Sigh...

Anybody has any suggestions? Apparently, there is another ZTH member with the exact same problems. Any help would really be appreciated by us... Cheers.

r u using Regular fuel for ur D4 engine?
D4 suppose to use Regular fuel only.

ermmm... not 97 or 100.
coz while the nadia d4 hit my area
many of them got firing problems.
the noozles got problem..
change noozle change fuel type.
Regular should be Unleaded. not super unleaded.
hoep this help u...

so, may be u try to change ur fuel first... try half tank if u're worried.. or at least 10bucks. if it still happens, check ur injectors... each cost u few hundreds i think.
u got 4!

it should be Unleaded in Shell station. Petronas is Regular... and esso is the one beisde F1... these are the stations available in my place.

bangsar.........

actually this car rec run on 100 octane.....if u put leaded the fuel is more dirty lagi teruk...that what i think.......my boss car use 105 octane from racing fuel all problem solved.........power n no vibration at all n ac also cool all the time

Huh? Where can I get 100 Octane fuel?

Alvin, I'll send my car to your place tomorrow morning. I really need to sort out this problem.

Subject: 3.1.7) What kind of fuel should I use?

The owner's manual recommends 87 octane regular unleaded fuel.
The RAV4 is not designed to take advantage of higher octane gas, so
while putting it in will not harm your vehicle, you will receive no
benefit and the cost is significantly higher. If you are hearing
a "knock" or "rattle" sound from your engine during high load, and
the problem is reduced or eliminated by higher octane gas, then you
probably need an engine tune-up.

check o2 sensor

check your o2 sensor as well,

very simple test can be done by yourself, go find out the o2 sensor socket in your engine bay and unplug it and test.... my altezza have the similar problem, this is what i did to find out my o2 sensor was the culprit. hope it help

once u unplug the 02 sensor...... check eng light will come on or sometime won't....then ur ecu will have a fault code....... then u need a diagnostic tool to clear it for you........

altenatively you can use multimeter probing at the O2 sensor connector to monitoring the signal, it should be 8 cycles in 10 sec and less than or more than 0.45 volt is not ideal...

but not everyone own a multimeter at home... by unpluged the O2 sensor is a simple and easier way for dummy like me to determine O2 sensor fault, it does produce a fault code but it can be clear off by resetting your ECU after you have your problem fixed. not a proper way but no harm to try it...

Alvin,

I am now really confused. Should I use 94 Octane or 100 Octane fuel for a D-4 engine? Will send car to be diagnosed by you guys tomorrow.

Oh... I have just read the site artnet was referring to. The engine referred to is for the 1s generation RAV4s. Not the D-4.

1AZFSE - Unleaded Regular Gasoline.
20valves would be - Unleaded Premium Gasoline.
this is wht i found on net.
well, about the grade u check with japan standard.

Hi guys,

Thank you for the responses. I sent my car to Vision Bangsar and got the problems sorted! They ran a diagnostic on the car and found that the fuel pressure sensor is faulty. Replaced with a new one. Costs around RM650. I also serviced the car, did some balancing and alignment. I also replaced the disc brakes and the pads. All in all, spent RM3,500 that Saturday afternoon! I am going to have to eat porridge and grass these next few months! But, so happy that my problems are solved. Thanks Yong!

artnet,

Found out that the Toyota AZ-FSE D-4 engine runs on 94 RON (regular) fuel. It can run on 97 RON (super) as well. Upgrading to a higher RON fuel actually means that the engine runs cleaner, idling is smoother and fuel economy is slightly better. There are no bad effects from running either RON fuels.

Alvin,

It is impossible to obtain 100 RON fuel in Malaysia, unless you are a Racing Outfit. Plus, 100 RON is too expensive!

b18c5,

Bro... Thanks for the offer. If you cannot get UMW Toyota to check your car for you, just send your baby to Vision Bangsar. It's actually Super Vision Car Care Sdn Bhd, located between BP and Shell near the Jalan Telawi square. They took 5 minutes to diagnose the problem. So relieved now. I'm sending my car there from now on.
